The Migration in Australia.

October 30th 2006 15:48
Melbourne is one of the biggest "greek cities" of the world. Darwin is one of the most cosmopolitan cities in AUstralia. The immigration brought to Perth, the far-off capital of western Australia, a british and south-african taste.

Although being a country shaped by an immigrants wave, Australia have an insecurity toward foreigners.

The government is compromised toward the multi-culturalism. The Immigration Office have tried not to discriminate.
These policies do work in a similar way like any other corporation: Australia recruit labour who have qualification for filling the country's needs.

In the past, about 1820, Australia competed with the countries of the New World for having migrants - especially with United States and Canada. However, at this moment, getting a visa to Australia can become a tough task due to the global terrorism.

The government continues to face a wave of critique for the way they treat those who try the asylum policy. Any boat deriving from Indonesia, for example - is detained to be judged. The detention is justified as being an security and sanitary issue.
Whether the last federal election's results, in 2001, are an indication, the most australians seem to aprove such policy.
During the last two generations, a discriminatory immigration policy in Australia tried keeping the marks of its european background avoiding a huge number of asians of entering in the country. This policy was abandoned in the middle of the 70's.

The immigration will cause problems to Australia in a very soon future, inclusively putting up higher pressure on the racial relations and overcrowded big cities, especially Sydney. It will also show off great opportunities in a moment the nation seek a modernity future and multi-culturalism.

yes, it seems that most of the new immigrants come to Sydney.. that's gotta make some huge problems in the future... they need immigrants in the other, smaller cities!

have you also realized that there is a sort of division in Sydney? I mean, if you have a look at the South Sydney, especially West and East, it seems the immigrants as lebanese, italians, portuguese, greeks, chinese, vietnamise and others, they have their own suburbs. However, you can not see such mix once yoú've crossed the Harbour Bridge heading up to the North Shore. So , i see Sydney as being 'immigrants live in the South, australians in the North.', basically.

you're right buddy....
i think the government should give the same chance of getting visa for all the countries around the world...
i mean, why just some countries in europe can get the working holiday visa!?
they say it's because they have more skills... but to do what? dig holes on the asfalt? building tables and chairs? being a waiter and cleaner? that's not fair... some people from south america and africa can do more than this... and really contribute to raise australia's economy!
i think i must stop here, before I say some bullshit!
hehe

c ya mate!

Of course people stay in their groups and cloistered communities - it's safe there, there are no racist jokes there, people don't question your culture and make fun of you there.
And what about "if you don't like it you know what you can do?" this is how the average Australian respoinds to any criticism or opinion that opens the lines of communication and means they may have to question or maybe even improve upon the way things are. It's as if people sign away their right to have any kind of opinion as soon as they cross the border.
Surely one of the ideas of Multi-culturalism is that we all come together and make a diverse and richly textured community which embraces the knowledge and wisdom of all inhabitants. Instead we have a place where you have to forget everything you know, join a sports team and buy a BBQ so you can char meat in the outdoors while you down a slab to assimilate. Having some babies will help too - you're providing the country with a new batch of wage slaves to foot the bill for the pensions of the future.
Putting up with the ignorance and racism wears people down and damages their self esteem. How can they assimilate if people won't let them in while still retaining parts of the culture they came with? It's as if they have to censor themselves and the things that make them who they are.
It's a circular problem and hopefully one we can solve soon otherwise we will all have a hard road to travel in the future. One way we may be able to help at grass roots level is to take the time to get to know people of other cultures, learn about where they're from and why they do things a certain way. Ignorance breeds fear and contempt and we have to get out of that downward spiral and come together peacefully.

Sorry to be fussy, anonymous, but crossing the border isn't an option in Australia as it's surrounded by water. It would be so cool if it were linked by land to Asia, though...

Yeah I find it hard to settle here as generally people don`t like foreigners (perhaps just the area we live in) When we first moved here there was so much sabotage to our business and people were very rude - one guy refused to talk to any of us saying "I only speak to people who talk English". Well considering that we ONLY speak English......hhmmmmm! Then my mum said hello to a young guy who was browsing through the store and asked if he needed help - his reply? "Don`t talk to me when I don`t know what you are"
It is difficult enough to make a move to the other side of the world and be met with such hostility. And it is not by choice sometimes, sometimes it is out of a genuine fear for your life that you pack up and relocate to a new country. And then you are expected to forget where you came from ontop of it!
Yes a good place to stop before I even get started on the whole Immigration Test thing..........

I work in migration, my company assist people in getting to Australia.

And I glad there are tough rule for getting in. Whilst I believe that Australia needs to increase the population to improve the economy, skill shortage etc. I also believe that Australia needs to be picky. We should only be letting migrant in who can contribute to our country in a positive way. While this sounds high and mighty and in some ways unfair, we don't want to open the country to struggle cause if it did then people would be migrating out of Australia and into another country that is in Australia's current position.

Help those in need and also help those who are here.
