Capitalizing On Immigration

Business Week has published an interesting article that says...."One-quarter of the publicly traded, venture capital-backed companies started in the past 15 years in the U.S. were founded by immigrant entrepreneurs, according to "American Made: The Impact of Immigrant Entrepreneurs and Professionals on U.S. Competitiveness," a 2006 national survey commissioned by the National Venture Capital Assn. The current market capitalization of these firms exceeds $500 billion, and they employ more than 220,000 people in the U.S. and 400,000 internationally. Immigrants have had the greatest impact in the fields of IT, life sciences, and particularly in the high-technology manufacturing sector, where 40% of publicly traded, venture-backed firms operating in the U.S. today were founded by immigrants. Not surprising, we have a Vietnamese's immigrant here in Australia who is a nuclear physicist (if I remember correctly) and his wife is an engineer of sorts.

Immigration only has benefits in the end, pending the pre-conceived notions people have about foreigners.

Ahmed,
Immigration is often so controversial, and divisive, in the States...But,
all my life I've known what I'd do if opportunity (life) was in one place,
and I had been born in another place, and someone said I couldn't go
where the opportunity was...

But, there's probably more than two ways to look at this...

From a humanitarian perspective, our fellow human beings, who migrate to support their families, continue to suffer at the hands of immigration policies that separate them from family members and drive them into remote parts of the American desert, sometimes to their deaths. This suffering should not continue.

Now is the time to address this pressing humanitarian issue which affects so many lives and undermines basic human dignity. Our society should no longer tolerate a status quo that perpetuates a permanent underclass of persons and benefits from their labor without offering them legal protections.
